St. Mary's Church and complex - 1st Ave. North. St. Mary's complex
consists of the twin-spired Gothic church, begun in 1900 and completed
in 1902, the rectory, the convent, and the elementary and High school
building. The first rectory, which was razed in 1982, stood to the west
of the convent and north of the Church. This rectory, built in 1879,
had many and varied functions. It served as rectory, convent, dormitory,
faculty residence and classroom annex.
Constructed in 1900 by Frank H. Dyckman for the village of Sleepy Eye,
as a token of his appreciation for the kindness the town had shown him
at the beginning of his business career. Frank H. Dyckman came to
Sleepy Eye around 1878 at the age of 17. While in Sleepy Eye, Dyckman
owned the State Bank and was a partner in the Sleepy Eye Milling Company.
The Chicago and Northwestern train depot was acquired from the railroad
company by the Sleepy Eye Depot Preservation group in 1984. After
extensive renovation, the depot was turned over to the Sleepy Eye Area
Historical Society. The society has maintained a museum pertaining to
Sleepy Eye history since that time, 794-5053.
