Brief History of Sleepy Eye Baseball Association

Sleepy Eye Baseball Association was founded in 1949 and was incorporated
as a non-profit Association with the State of Minnesota. Their primary purpose
throughout the 195O's and 196O's was to support area baseball with their semi-pro
team, "The Sleepy Eye Indians". These were the days of the Western Minny League
with many pro players traveling around from team to team to get paid by playing
Baseball. Several of these semi-pro players still live around the Sleepy Eye
Area. In the 197O's, the Indian Baseball Team went strictly Amateur and the
Sleepy Eye Association started to sponsor a youth program, also. The current
Association sponsors three Pee-Wee teams for ages 10-13, one Youth team for ages
13-16 and one men's Amateur team (the Indians). The Indians currently play in the
Tomahawk League.

The Local Association, with the help of the City Parks Department, also helps
maintain the Sleepy Eye Baseball Park. Some of the more recent improvements of the
Park include new dugouts in the mid-198O's, a new 10-inning electronic scoreboard in
1989, new bathrooms, and a press box in 1989, also, expanding the sprinkling system
in 1997.

Currently, the Baseball Park is home to six different teams throughout the spring
and summer. Sleepy Eye Public and Sleepy Eye St. Mary's High School teams.

When fall rolls around, the 13-member Association will reseed and resod the worn
spots on the field to prepare the park for another year. Sleepy Eye is proud of the
Baseball tradition and continues to be one of the primary sports in the area. In a 20
mile radius of Sleepy Eye, there are 4 VFW teams, 5 Legion teams, 7 High School teams,
and 10 Men's Amateur teams.
